Biography
His smile was amazing and addictive. So was his witty sense of humor and incredible kindness. Cody was born in Boise, Idaho and later lived in Washington State and Pennsylvania before moving to Indiana. As a young boy Cody knew he wanted to dedicate his life to helping others. In the small town of Sunman, Cody met a volunteer firefighter that he had seen in uniform one day. The firefighter invited Cody to the fire station and there it all began. Before Cody Medley walked into the fire station in Sunman, Indiana, he wanted to become a paramedic. Once inside the department, his fate was sealed. At the young age of 17, Cody joined and received his firefighter certification by the time he turned 18; shortly thereafter he earned his EMT certification.
For the years that Medley served the Sunman Fire Department, he was nothing but focused on his career. His drive, ambition, motivation, and zeal proved that Cody was truly a steward of his fellow man and would go on to do great things. So after three years, Medley handed in his resignation letter. He had been hired to work as a paramedic in Indianapolis; it was a dream come true, a life goal reached. Cody had been hired by Wishard EMS, which later merged with other local EMS agencies to form Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services.

Throughout the cold night and into the morning of February 16, 2013, Cody and his partner EMT Timothy McCormick had responded to many calls involving the homeless. The call they were returning from was no different. A homeless man had been assaulted and Cody and Tim treated him with the utmost care and respect. As the ambulance entered an intersection, an auto that failed to stop at a red flashing traffic signal struck it. The force of the impact caused the ambulance to flip onto its passenger side and crash into parked cars. Cody and Tim were trapped inside the smashed cab of the ambulance. Rescuers tirelessly and quickly extricated Tim and Cody from the wreckage, and the two were transported to nearby Wishard Memorial Hospital in cardiac arrest. Cody regained a pulse in the emergency department. However, his injuries were deemed to be non-survivable. Cody was taken off life support the following day and succumbed to his injuries.

Honored 2014
