Mark understood the value of life at an early age. As a toddler during a physical exam, a physician allowed him to listen to his own heartbeat and then asked him what would happen if it stopped beating. His reply was, "I wouldn't hear it anymore. From that age on those who had any contact with Mark felt the warmth of his commitment to life.
In 1983, Mark graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in psychology. At the same time he completed a course in emergency medical service and took a job as an attendant specialist and later as a cardiovascular technician. Mark wished to serve others with every gift and ability he had. This led him to further his career in medical service.

He attended and graduated nursing school at Piedmont Virginia Community College. In 1987 he was employed by the Burn Center at the University of Virginia Medical Center and became head nurse in 1988. In February, 1989 Mark and his wife Carrollynn, a registered nurse in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, completed the necessary training and became volunteers with the Lake Monticello Squad.

Mark began running calls in April and served one month with the squad before he was involved in the same accident that killed fellowcrew member Russ Copeland. While serving on a team transporting a cardiac patient, the ambulance he was riding in went out of control and was hit by a vehicle. Mark was unresponsive at the scene and died several hours later. He was 28 years of age.

Although a member of the squad, Carrollynn was not running calls with Mark. She was pregnant with their first child. Seth Nesbitt Lockhart was born six months after his father's death.

Emergency medical service is a family affair in Mark's family. Carrollynn has put her work in pediatric intensive care on hold to be a full time mom, and his sister, Deborah Lockhart, is an operating room registered nurse.

Mark had a zest for life and lived every day to its fullest. He gave himself entirely to everything he undertook.

"He knew the risks of real love."
