It is a calling; people who do this honorable work do it out of their love for what they do and the people they help. Misty so loved the work she did, she often called it the "coolest job ever." Misty had other loves as well. First and foremost, her love for her son Kenley and stepdaughter Kayla trumped all else. She enjoyed golf, fishing, and playing Bunko, and as a teen she competed in local beauty pageants. Her friends say it was truly an honor to work with such a dedicated professional. Paramedic students she mentored spoke of her always smiling face and her words of encouragement. Misty worked in the ER at Jackson General Hospital before becoming a flight nurse with Hospital Wing.
On the morning of Thursday, March 25, 2010 the crew of Hospital Wing 5 received a call to transport a patient from Parsons, TN to the Jackson General Hospital. After completing the call and with a storm quickly approaching, the crew took off to return to their base just a short flight away in Brownsville, TN. Just minutes from the base, the helicopter crashed at approximately 6:00 a.m. Misty Brogdon, 34, flight nurse Cindy Parker, and pilot Doug Phillips were all killed in the crash.
Starting in May 2011, the Misty Brogdon Memorial scholarship fund will award scholarships to a graduating senior of Halls High School and one from Southside High School, where she attended, who is continuing his or her education in the field of nursing. A third scholarship will be awarded to a student already enrolled at Union University. An annual fast-pitch softball tournament has been organized to help fund the scholarship.
