Senator Mel Martinez spoke before the Senate stating, "Mr. President, I wish to speak on behalf of Florida and the people of the United States. I wish to thank Rescue Lieutenant Rafael Vazquez for his service to his community and the safety he helped to promote." A family friend summed up the legacy Rafael Vazquez left behind; he created a solid foundation for all his family and friends.<br />

Rafael Vazquez, 42, died in the line of duty on March 3, 2008. He was killed by a gunman at a restaurant where he was taking a lunch break while involved in a training course taught to help save people who were hurt.<br />

Paramedic Vazquez had been employed with the Palm Beach Fire Rescue since 2001. He was promoted to Rescue Lieutenant in January of 2007. Previously, he worked for the Town of Lake Park, Florida.<br />
<br />
Rafael led a life committed to public service. His supervisors spoke of him with great pride. He was a hard worker and very smart. His friends liked his sense of humor and how he could break a tense moment with his jokes. He would always carry more than his load of work duties. His wife spoke of his devotion and love of his family.<br />
