Sekou was happy with his career choice. He decided to become a firefighter about six years after his life was saved by a San Francisco firefighter. "He was a happy, outgoing person, very helpful; he was always asking what he could do to help," stated Deputy Chief Mark Blanchard.
Sekou Turner, 28, lost his life in the line of duty on May 22, 2002. He and his crew had completed a medical response call and were prepared to leave the scene with the patient, when Sekou collapsed to the ground. Crew members immediately performed CPR while Turner was en route to San Ramon Regional Medical Center. However, they could not revive him.
Turner was a graduate of the Alameda County Fire Department's fire academy and was performing extremely well. He had served as a firefighter since July 2001.
