Michelle gave her life helping another and that is, by far, the greatest thing a person can do. So many first responders put their lives on the line every day. When there is a loss, we come together and let the family know we are here for them.
Michelle Smith, 29, was killed in the line of duty on December 22, 2008. She was assisting with medical care of a critically injured patient at the scene of a motorcycle accident on December 20, 2008. A police officer had blocked the side of the road, giving protection to the medical worker and her patient. He noticed a car traveling at a high rate of speed and jumped back into his car. The speeding vehicle hit the police car, which hit the two on the ground. Smith and the patient were taken to the hospital where she died from her injuries two days later.
Smith has been a volunteer EMS/firefighter with Delaware City Fire Company for more than five years. Although Michelle's life was short, helping others is what she enjoyed doing.
