Biography
Darren Bean exemplified what we should all strive to be; he was a true hero. He saw the Emergency Medical Service as a valuable asset to each community and Darren loved working in the field. He was a high achiever, always striving to be better.<br /> <br /> Darren Bean, 37, was killed in the line of duty on May 10, 2008. He was part of a medical team involved in a medical transport of a patient from Prairie du Chien to a LaCrosse hospital in Wisconsin. Weather conditions were rainy with fog and the helicopter came down in a densely wooded hilly terrain. There were no survivors.<br /> <br /> Dr. Bean was a Med Flight physician for six years and the Madison Fire Department's medical director for the past 16 months. He was the director of ultrasound for the University of Wisconsin Hospital Emergency Department.<br /> <br /> Darren was assistant professor with the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and received his medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine. Dr. Bean was instrumental in revising EMS protocols across the country. He liked to fly-fish, mountain bike, and spend time with his family. He was always busy, and accomplished a great deal in his short life.<br /> <br /> Honored 2009
