The Greek poet, Homer, once wrote "life and death are balanced on the edge of a razor." Their mission to provide medical care to those with the greatest need was simple, but always with risks. "All of Texas mourns the loss of these special people; they will be missed," stated The Honorable Ken Bentsen of Texas during a memorial for the crew held at Rice University.
Charles R. "Mac" Atteberry, 30, was killed in the line of duty on July 17, 1999. He was the paramedic and part of a three-person medical team involved in a patient transport when the helicopter crashed into rural Fort Benty County, about 60 miles south of Houston.
Atteberry had been with Life Flight for seven years; prior to that he was a paramedic with Cypress Creek Emergency Medical Service and a volunteer firefighter.
Charles was a dedicated and caring individual who made the ultimate sacrifice," stated Memorial Hermann President and CEO Dan Wilford.
