Billy Ray Sullivan had worked for New England Life Flight for three weeks before his fatal crash on July 14, 1984. However, he was one of their most experienced pilots--1,000 hours of flight time in the same type helicopter he was flying that day.

Billy had flown three flights that day with no problems. During a fourth transport flight, Billy radioed that one engine had failed. Shortly afterward, he radioed the flight service that the other engine had lost power. The flight service did not hear from him again.

He left behind his wife, Tammy, and five children. He was 35 years old when he gave his life to help another receive needed medical care.
