| Don was very involved and dedicated to his profession, and he loved every minute at work. "These were extraordinary people, always above the call," stated Larry Levy, CEO of Med Flight Air Ambulance. "Losing one good person is like losing five, but to lose five good flight rescuers is more then we can absorb at one time. They were all such good people; they were all stars in their profession of Flight Rescue."<br /> <br /> Donald, 45, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was killed in a fiery crash of a Med Flight Air Ambulance on October 24, 2004. The air rescue ambulance team was returning to its home base from the completion of a patient transfer from a cruise ship to a San Diego hospital. They were about a minute into flight when all contact was lost on radar, not a sign of trouble from the pilots. All aboard were killed.<br /> <br /> Mr. Womble completed paramedic school in 1994 and worked at Albuquerque Ambulance for 11 years. He was a member of the D-MAT team, and later became a flight paramedic for Med Flight Air Ambulance. He had completed his prerequisite for nursing school and was scheduled to start clinical in May.<br /> <br /> He enjoyed his work, which he was able to share with his beloved wife and friend, Laura. Don loved to travel; he spent seven years in Japan and knew the language fluently. He found travel to be his biggest hobby, one of the appealing aspects of his becoming a flight paramedic. He spent most of his life side by side with his Laura, riding their Harleys, or playing "Mr. Tool Time" on their farm. The couple loved music, and Don could do a mean impression of Elvis Presley. He always spoke highly of Laura; he was happy that he could spend every hour with her and he loved his children more than anything. Don and Laura traveled together as flight medics and sadly they died together.<br /> <br /> Honored 2007 |
