Biography
Working with any kind of tool should warrant instruction, care, and above all, safety. The person who uses any tool should understand that logic. Tools used in the improper way can become deadly. A valuable lesson will be learned by a young emergency medical worker who used the life-saving defibrillator as a toy.

Courtney Hilton, 23, died in the line of duty on June 4, 2005. She was returning from a medical call when her partner, in a playful way, zapped her with a defibrillator paddle. A defibrillator is a tool used to help start a person's heart when it has stopped. Ms. Hilton was shocked once, her body went limp and she fell into unconsciousness. She was immediately rushed to the Russell County Medical Center, and then transferred to the Bristol Regional Medical Center in Tennessee. After three days of desperate attempts to save her life, Courtney succumbed to cardiac arrest.

Ms. Hilton was an emergency medical worker with the Highlands Ambulance Service. She had worked her way through school to achieve her goal of starting her career in the medical field, beginning as an EMT.

Honored 2006
