"It was the first funeral for an emergency medical team killed in the town's history," said the agency's chief. Many hundreds turned out to show their respect for Ms. Behr and in Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Heidi Jean Behr, 23, was killed in the line of duty May 3, 2005. She was riding in the back compartment of the rescue vehicle attending her patient when the accident occurred. The driver of the ambulance lost control trying to avoid a stopped vehicle. The rescue vehicle left the road, hitting a tree and taking the life of Ms. Behr. Life-saving medical supplies scattered the accident scene, reminding everyone that the two rescue workers were achieving a most important job - that of saving lives. The patient strapped safely in the ambulance survived the accident.
Ms. Behr was an emergency medical worker for Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps Inc. She was the recipient of two awards, the Top Responder Award and Corpsman of the Year Award. "Heidi was never one to have a fuss made over her, but she sure had one made at her funeral; it was very moving," said her mother.
