A multiple vehicle crash resulted in the death on January 11, 1975, of 64-year-old Amon Melton.

Amon was driving an ambulance transporting a patient to the hospital. He radioed to Huntingdon, Tennessee, police and asked them to provide an escort through the town. As Amon followed the police car, the police car veered to the right to avoid a tractor trailer crossways in the road attempting a turn. The ambulance did not veer and struck the back wheels of the truck. Another car then struck the back of the ambulance. The driver of the truck was charged with failure to yield.
Amon was an active member of the Flatwoods United Methodist Church and a Mason.
