It has been written in many books the agony of being lost or missing. One can only try to comprehend the fear that one must feel. It is hard to grasp the thoughts of where a loved one has gone, or what they may have encountered. The teams that join in the search must endure differences of day and night temperatures, terrains and animals. They contend with wet clothing, hunger, and many different insect bites. Yet they do not give up easily. Teams will search for days and weeks, and many team members will volunteer to search on their own. This is done in the name of trying to bring the lost or missing person home again. It was on such a search that a rescue squad member lost his life.
Harvey Jennings Lamm, 39, of Mount Pleasant Rescue Squad of Bailey, North Carolina, died May 2, 1991 of a massive heart attack while on a search and rescue call. The search was one that lasted for several days and nights. It was in heavy wooded areas, with vast fields, and ponds that had to be dragged. The stress and over-exertion that Mr. Lamm was under during the search attributed to his heart attack.
Mr. Lamm joined Mount Pleasant Rescue Squad in 1988 as an Emergency Medical Technician. The squad served the area of southern Nash County in the duties of EMS and Search and Rescue. Butch, as he liked to be called, achieved his goal of becoming a paramedic in July 1990.
