St. Anthony's Flight-for-Life program had flown 4. 5 million miles in 22 years without an accident until July 9, 1994.

On that day, Sandy was the flight nurse on a rescue helicopter picking up a hiker with a broken ankle on steep 12,500-feet terrain.

As the pilot was searching for a landing spot, the helicopter bounced over the search and rescue crew and rolled 1,000 feet down the side of the mountain. Witnesses said it appeared that one of the helicopter's blades hit the mountain slope, flipping the helicopter.

Both crew members were killed. Sandy, 43, gave her life in the attempt to rescue the injured hiker who was eventually taken off the mountain by foot and ambulance.
