At the age of 14, Mike began working the radios for Cedarville Fire Department, and became an active firefighter and an EMT-A at the age of 18.

He received his certification as a firefighter II in 1995 and certification as a paramedic during the month of his death. Mike died on December 18, 1995, after his truck ran off the road and struck an embankment.

Ironically, he was answering a call to Leamon's Ambulance for emergency care for a cardiac patient. Although Mike was only 24 when he died, friends remember his dedication to the community and his willingness to help in times of need.
