St. Anthony's Flight-for-Life program had flown 4. 5 million miles in 22 years without an accident until July 9, 1994. On that day, Gary was piloting the rescue helicopter to pick up a hiker with a broken ankle on steep 12,500-feet terrain.
As Gary was searching for a landing spot, the helicopter bounced over the search and rescue crew and rolled 1,000 feet down the side of the mountain. Witnesses said it appeared that one of the helicopter's blades hit the mountain slope, flipping the helicopter.
Both crew members were killed. Gary had flown for 18 months for St. Anthony and for Flight-for-Life in Colorado Springs before then. He was 49 years old when he gave his life trying to rescue the injured hiker.
