Just before the Midwest MedFlight on December 1, 1994, went down, Richard signaled mayday. He was piloting the helicopter en route to transport a critical cardiac patient to St. Joseph. Shortly after takeoff, the helicopter suddenly fell to earth.

Before the accident, smoke was seeping from the helicopter's tail, the landing gear was down, and its four rotors were turning slower than usual.

The helicopter had previous maintenance problems but no accidents, and was a backup used because the regular helicopter was being serviced. Richard, 42, had been piloting helicopters for 24 years, during two tours of duty in Germany and one year in Vietnam. After retiring from the Army in 1990, Richard went to work for Midwest MedFlight.

He was survived by his wife, Karin, and two daughters, Stacie and Amie.
