Mark Beck, EMT-P, was president of Abernathy Volunteer EMS and advisor during Lubbock's implementation of the emergency response system. He had been employed at University Medical Center, along with his wife Connie, an EMS dispatcher, for five years.<br />
<br />
Mark was completing an act of kindness when he died on July 24, 1991. He was directing his partner who was backing the ambulance under a metal awning at a nursing home to prevent their elderly patient from getting wet in the drizzle that was falling. During the maneuver Mark's head was pinned between the ambulance and a metal beam on the awning. Mark was 33 years old when he died in the line of duty.<br />

Allen "Tiny" Grey, Mark's partner, remembers him as a "very, very good paramedic."<br />
