Biography
When the needs of service by emergency medical workers are called to task, there is little time for anything but action. Some call this thankless work, however, those in the EMS field want to see good medical results from their actions, not words. If a thank-you comes along, well it's special. J.W. always saw to the needs of his patients. He was caring and giving to each patient he served and was known for complimenting co-workers for jobs well done. He was always eager to learn new methods and find better materials that would help both the patient and the EMS worker. J.W. loved his job in the rescue service.

James W. (J.W.) Sutherland, 43, of Lebanon, Virginia, died in the line of duty on October 14, 2006. While at work Mr. Sutherland started having chest pains and he allowed a co-worker to take him to the hospital. He died at the Russell County Medical Center of a heart attack.

James Sutherland was an employee with the Highlands Ambulance Service. Prior to his medical work he had served his country in the U. S. Army.

J.W. had overcome many adverse situations in his life, but he never let his problems be known to those around him. He would have been so proud to know he was honored as a worker in the EMS field.

Honored 2008
