"Why he was the one on duty to answer calls that resulted in five deaths in a week is hard to understand," a co-worker stated. "A regular call is hard enough but to deal with death several times a week is very stressful. We are trained for this, of course, but one never gets used to it. We will never know if the stress of those five deaths led to his heart failure, but we all realize it becomes personal after a while."
Larry Doughton Crouse, 50, of Glade Valley, North Carolina, died of cardiac arrest on December 31, 2005. He was not available to sign off for narcotic keys or make a report. Since this was highly unusual, his co-workers went to check on him. They found Larry on the floor, breathless and without a pulse. Resuscitation was immediately started, however, all efforts were unsuccessful. He was taken to Alleghany Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Mr. Crouse had been an EMT-Paramedic employed by Alleghany County Emergency Medical Service since 1998. In previous years he served as captain of the squad, and had received the status of shift supervisor.

"He was one of Emergency Medical Service's finest, always giving of himself and Larry was a really good paramedic," stated a co-worker.
