Biography
Mark was just one of those kind of guys. He worked extra hard in living his American dream. He loved life and he put forth the effort to live it to the fullest. He worked fill-in times to make sure he and his family could go on that extra special vacation, like a trip to Disney Land. Mark forever commented to his children that he was not able to complete his college career and regretted it; however he made sure they both had the chance to attend. He was a family man in every sense of the word. His devoted wife stated, "On September 11 he may have become one of America's heroes, but he had always been their family's hero".Mark Schwartz, 50, lost his life in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. His team was among the first to arrive at the Twin Towers. He was assessing the injured situation and finding a location for triage when the first building came down. Mark's body was recovered two days later. His co-workers say that life at the squad has just not been the same without Mark.Mr. Schwartz became an EMT twenty years ago for the Rosedale Volunteer Ambulance Corporation. He realized his calling for helping others and made it his profession becoming a full-time employee for Hunter Ambulance in Nassau County, New York. There he became vice president, and was named supervisor for the Mayor's EMS Mutual Aid Task Force. The task force was to assist in major disasters. Mark and his team, proving that such a plan worked, made the supreme sacrifice. He called his wife just before the building fell telling her of the horror and that parts of the building were falling all around.Honored 2002
