Biography
"They were four of our shining stars."<br /> <br /> "She was always smiling," remembers Jan Davis, the medical crew supervisor. "Sheila was a lovely person, dedicated not only to her family, but to any patient she came into contact with." "She loved her job, she loved her family," said Janie Credlebaugh, airport manager at Jackson, Kentucky where UK Air Medical helicopter N2743E was based. Her family and friends saw Sheila's pride in always striving to be the best possible flight nurse she could be.<br /> <br /> Sheila Zellers, 43, lost her life on June 14, 1999 in a helicopter crash on a tree-covered, rocky mountainside in Breathitt County, Kentucky. After a quiet day of work in Jackson, the four were headed back to UK Hospital in Lexington. Their helicopter ambulance crashed just minutes after liftoff in dense fog killing Zellers and her three crewmates.<br /> <br /> Zellers began her nursing career in her home county at Twin Lakes Medical Center in Leitchfield, Kentucky after graduating nursing school in 1985. Later that same year, Zellers took a staff nurse position at the University of Kentucky Hospital in the Neurosurgical ICU where she worked four years before moving to the Emergency Department. And in 1991 she was honored to become a UK flight nurse.<br /> <br /> Sheila Zellers is survived by her husband Jeff; her four sons Chad, Jairus, Nathanael and Aaron; her two sisters Teresa and Annette; and her parents Frances and J.T.
