Christy Pennington wore many different hats: full-time college student, full-time mother, volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician--all while holding down a full-time job. She was also an accomplished equestrian and loved to be outdoors.
On March 14, 1991, while responding to a call on her pager, Christy's vehicle skidded on a patch of ice and was hit by on-coming traffic. Johnny Patterson, Christy's fiance, was an emergency medical technician on the ambulance that answered the call to the accident. Ironically, it was Johnny's birthday. He arrived at the accident scene to find that Christy's three month old son, Jonathan, had been killed instantly. Christy died the next day--March 15, 1991--at the age of 20.
