Colin was a newcomer to emergency medical services, an exceptional student, and caring EMS provider. He was accepted in the Malcolm X - Oakton Community College Paramedic program, achieved his license, and was working for Consolidated Medical Transport. A position with the Chicago Fire Department was Colin's ultimate goal.

On June 17, 1995, Colin was riding in an ambulance responding to a call when the brakes on the ambulance failed. The ambulance struck a tractor trailer.

Colin was transported to Christ Hospital Trauma Center, Oak Lawn, Illinois where he died of multiple injuries.

He left behind his mother, Claire Outerbridge, father, Padraic T. Spence, two brothers, Paddy and Justin Spence and his fiance, Catherine Brickhill.

Gregory Jankowski, Colin's friend and EMS instructor, said, "Colin always went beyond what was expected of him for the betterment of his patients. A true and loving person. I will miss him."

Colin will be deeply missed by his family, friends and the entire Chicago E. M. S. community.
