Rodney was a Vietnam veteran and in May, 1986 left his position with the Tennessee Army National Guard to fly full-time for SkyMed, a hospital-based helicopter service. He died seven months later on December 3, 1986 at the age of 40.

The rescue helicopter based at Park View Medical Center which Rodney was piloting had been airborne less than two minutes when it crashed. All three members of the rescue team were killed in the accident, including Rodney and the patient he and the crew were trying to save.

He left behind his wife Jeannie and one daughter. The patients he transported will remember a dedicated individual who often made follow-up visits to check on their progress.
