Biography
One of the quickest ways to get help for the critically injured is by air. The men and women who choose careers in flight to save others are everyday heroes. This is their job; and they are the best of the best. Each is a highly trained and dedicated individual in the field of treating the sick and injured. If the air vehicle goes down, often the whole team is lost. It is a tremendous loss, because they are such talented people.Phillip H. Herring, 43, lost his life in an aero medical accident on June 21, 2002. The helicopter had left a Norfolk hospital en route to airlift an injured child. However, about three miles into flight, pilot Herring calmly reported he was landing at an area airport and asked to have a mechanic available. Attempting to land, the helicopter went into a spin and crashed killing all three of the medical team aboard.Mr. Herring, of Lincoln, Nebraska, was an accomplished pilot with years of experience in the field of flight. He had worked with LifeNet of the Heartland for only four months when the accident occurred. He had served as a Marine captain, an instructor pilot with the Nebraska Army National Guard, and had been a flight instructor in Lincoln before joining LifeNet to become part of emergency helicopter medical evacuation."He was a good pilot, always careful, always checking the equipment and knew everything about the planes he flew. He had a record of safety, was an instructor, and had great respect for the skies in which he flew," said an ex co-worker.Honored 2006
