"John was one of the most caring dedicated people I've ever had the privilege of working with," stated Patricia Rhodes, his wife and a member of the Randolph County Emergency Services. "It seemed to come so natural to him," she stated.
John G. Rhodes, 40, died of a heart attack on May 8, 2001. John had just reported for duty at the EMS base in Archdale, North Carolina. He became ill during a shift report, and excused himself. When he did not return, some of his co-workers checked on him and found their teammate in full cardiac arrest. Resuscitation was attempted, but there was no return of pulses or respiratory. They transported John to High Point Regional Hospital where he was pronounced expired.
Mr. Rhodes graduated from Gilford Technical Community College earning an associate degree in Emergency Medical Sciences. John was a full-time employee of Randolph County EMS. He was a tactical paramedic with the Sheriff's Emergency Response Team, and was a part-time faculty member of the EMS program.
"He was a good solid rescue worker and he had a true respect for his profession and for people. You could always count on John to get the job done, and be there when you needed him," stated a fellow squad member.
