On December 12, 1995, Tammy Hanno, 33, was attempting to assist a stranded motorist when she was struck and killed by a car, She got out of her car to help a driver who had spun out of control and stalled in a median strip along a snow covered highway. Light snow was falling as the left front section of the car hit her causing extensive external and internal injuries. She died immediately on the scene.<br />

Tammy was a mother of four, was, a certified emergency medical technician and licensed practical nurse. She was a Lewis County Search and Rescue volunteer for several years and provided emergency aid for Turin Ambulance.<br />
<br />
"She was a very compassionate, caring individual," said Jim Deavers, Search and Rescue Operations Manager."It's a tragic thing," he said, "especially considering the accident occurred during her attempt to provide assistance to a fellow motorist."<br />
<br />
Attending night classes at Mohawk Valley Community College, Tammy was working toward a nursing degree.<br />
<br />
Tammy is survived by her husband, Andrew, and daughters, Chasity, Pamela, Kimberly and Rebecca.<br />
